Faith Friday: Orchestra of New Spain To Host Concerts Celebrating Juneteenth
Orchestra of New Spain will celebrate the Texas roots of Juneteenth for the second year with a range of classical music and song by Black composers.
Performances are at 7 p.m. June 9 at Zion Lutheran Church at 6121 E. Lovers Lane, at 7:30 p.m. June 10 at Lewisville Grand Theater at 100 N. Charles Street in Lewisville, and at 6:30 p.m. June 11 at St. Paul Lutheran Church and Christian Academy at 5725 S. Marsalis Avenue in Dallas.
The program will feature celebrated soprano and versatile local chorus master, Alfrelynn Roberts, in a program of John Carter and Courtney Carey’s arrangements of traditional spirituals I Wanna Be Ready and Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel. The exploration includes works of local protégé Quinn Mason in Petite Symphonie de Chambre Contemporaine (après Milhaud), honoring French composer Darius Milhaud, and Florence Price’s Adoration.
The work of Afro Cuban composer is represented in the programming with La Bella Cubana. The work of London-born and educated Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is also included in the program.
