Four HP Students Earn Landry Scholarships
Highland Park has opened its football season at the Tom Landry Classic for the past 13 years, so it makes sense that the school has seen more of its students than any other recognized at the event’s annual scholarship banquet.
This year was no exception, as four HPHS seniors who participated in last year’s game — as players, band members, cheerleaders, trainers, etc. — were among those honored at the Tom Landry Classic Scholarship Banquet.
The scholarship winners included football player Benji Walzel, whose scholarship was sponsored by Bank of Texas; football player Nicholas Ragland, sponsored by The Dallas Morning News; cheerleader Ashley Farley, sponsored by Nestle; and band member Benjamin Klimko, sponsored by Ebby Halliday Realtors.
Historically, the event has provided 220 scholarships during the past 15 years, and 58 of those have gone to HP students. This year, the four local recipients combined to volunteer almost 1,350 hours in the community during high school.
The Scots will open the 2015 season in the Landry Classic, of course, against Frisco Centennial on Aug. 29 at Eagle Stadium in Allen.
