Sports Club Purchases Pair of Big Ass Fans

Highland Park ISD trustees had two remaining gifts to approve for the fiscal year last night, and one of those gifts made some trustees a little skittish. Said gift was a pair of fans “with very descriptive names,” as Joe Taylor, the board’s finance officer, put it, and board president Leslie Melson thanked him for leaving it at that.

For further explanation, let’s go straight to Scots head football coach Randy Allen:

Re: Gift for Fans

Please accept a gift from the Sports Club for $21,000.00 for 2 Big Ass Fans put in the MPAC.

Sincerely,
Randy Allen

That’s right — the district’s Multi-Purpose Activity Center will be cooled by a pair of Big Ass Fans. They were purchased with $21,100 supplied by the Highland Park Sports Club. That club also provided the other gift approved Tuesday night: an in-kind donation of an E-Z-Go vehicle for the athletic trainers, the value of which is $10,389.

Those two items bring the fiscal year’s grand total of gifted revenue to $4.3 million. Taylor said that’s the equivalent of $15.2 million in recaptured tax dollars.

“The community is demonstrating that it is lockstep in support of the district, and we are so appreciative,” Taylor said.

Later, when approval of the 2013-14 budget came up on the agenda, Superintendent Dawson Orr pointed out that the figures include an assumed $2.7 million worth of gifts from PTAs, the Highland Park Education Foundation, and other benefactors. So keep those gifts coming, folks. We’ll be here to highlight the ones with funny names.

Who paid for the new Cool Ass Stadium Turf? (I made up that name.) How much did it cost?
