Film Documents Christians’ European Vacation

Highland Park High School alum Will Bakke has not yet graduated from Baylor University, but he’s already directed two documentaries. The first, One Nation Under God, chronicled a cross-country trip Bakke and three pals took to “get a sense of where our nation is at spiritually.” The second, Beware of Christians, is about a similar trip across Europe.

In each city they visited, Bakke, fellow HPHS grads Alex Carroll and Matt Owen, and First Baptist Academy alum Michael Allen talked about values and spirituality.

“We don’t really teach anything culturally about these places,” Bakke said with a laugh. “They just look pretty on camera.”

Because Rome is home to the Vatican, Bakke and his pals talked about church there. Because Munich is the site of Oktoberfest, that’s where they discussed alcohol. And because Paris is the fashion capital of the world, it prompted a discussion about materialism.

While they were in Paris, the foursome watched as people swarmed an experimental car and even applauded the driver as he emerged from it, treating him like a celebrity.

“We were laughing because we were just like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s perfect.’ Everyone around who saw this thing just dropped what they were doing and ran over to it to take pictures and film it, because it’s bright and shiny and it’s fast,” Bakke said.

“We were kind of pointing fingers at everybody who was doing that, but at the same time we were running over to it and we were taking pictures of it. We were filming it. We thought it was the coolest thing ever. So while we were there, we were like, ‘Oh my gosh, we’re in the same boat as everybody else.’ ”

Beware of Christians debuts April 2 at the Lakewood Theater. Read more about the film in this week’s edition of Park Cities People.
