Local Schools Hosting SPC Fall Championships
The SPC fall championships are back in Dallas this weekend, with titles up for grabs in four sports — football, volleyball, cross country, and field hockey.
The only local team remaining in football is ESD, which will meet Oklahoma City Casady for the small-school crown at 5 p.m. Saturday at Jesuit (which is serving as a host in place of Cistercian, probably because of stadium size).
In the large-school division, two schools located about six miles apart — Houston Kinkaid and Bellaire Episcopal — will travel more than four hours to play at 7 p.m. Friday at Jesuit.
The action gets underway today in the brackets for boys and girls volleyball, as well as field hockey, so let’s talk specifics.
The girls tournament will be at ESD, which plays Austin St. Andrew’s in the first round. Greenhill gets a bye to the quarterfinals by virtue of a runner-up finish in the North Division, and will play on Friday. The championship match is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
The boys tournament at Greenhill begins tomorrow, with St. Mark’s as the top seed from the North Division. The Lions will play San Antonio St. Mary’s Hall in the quarterfinals, while the Hornets will face Episcopal. That final will be at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Hockaday is hosting the field hockey event, and has a bye to the quarterfinals after finishing second in the North Division during the regular season. Greenhill will play Houston Christian today in the first round. The championship game is slated for 1 p.m. Saturday.
St. Mark’s will host the cross country meet on Saturday at Norbuck Park, with the girls race beginning at 10 a.m., followed by the boys race.
