Bears, Hawks Earn TAPPS Tennis Titles
Ursuline claimed titles in both girls brackets at the TAPPS 6A state tennis tournament this week in Waco, enabling the Bears to repeat as team champions.
Ursuline freshman Erin Gan-Dy dominated in singles with four straight-set victories, only dropping seven games in the entire tournament. She defeated Yael Modrykamien of Parish Episcopal in the final, 6-2, 6-2.
Modrykamien eliminated Gan-Dy’s teammate, sophomore Coco Quinn, in the semifinals. Quinn was a doubles gold medalist a year ago for the Bears.
In this year’s doubles division, the Ursuline tandem of Tess Caracio and Reagan Montgomery was equally dominant. They earned the title in a three-set thriller against Plano John Paul II in the final match. Montgomery was a runner-up last year.
In the 2A division, Alcuin School’s Felix Ruda and Daniela Villamil each secured state titles in singles. Villamil survived third-set tiebreakers in each of her final two rounds.
Ruda, who finished second in the same bracket in each of the last two years, lost only six games during a run of four straight-set match victories. The Hawks were third in the team standings.
