Rutledge, Other HP Spring Signees Lauded
One of the top sprinters in Highland Park history will keep running next year at the University of Texas.
After signing with the Longhorns earlier this month, John Rutledge was honored on Thursday at the school along with three other HP athletes during a ceremony for spring signees.
Rutledge earned a silver medal in the 200 meters at the Class 5A state track and field meet on May 13 in Austin, on the same track where he will compete in college.
The two-sport captain also set a school record in the event during that final race for the Scots. In the fall, Rutledge was the top receiver on the HP football team with 49 catches for 758 yards and nine touchdowns.
Also recognized for their college commitments on Thursday were Gannon Gaubert, an offensive lineman who will be a preferred walk-on at TCU, plus soccer player Richie Paulus (Dallas Baptist) and wrestler Cooper Chapman (Wheaton College).
