Vogel Alcove Celebrates 35th Anniversary
Vogel Alcove celebrated its 35th anniversary in March as Dallas’ only organization dedicated to caring for homeless pre-school children.
The agency’s teachers, social workers, counselors, and therapists help children cope with the trauma of homelessness and give parents the support they need to improve their families’ lives.
“There were 23, 26 different Jewish organizations that came together to address the homelessness issue in Dallas. One of the first things they did was look for a project, and one of the biggest needs they felt was childcare for homeless children,” said Vogel Alcove CEO, Karen Hughes.
Founded and led by Thelma Vogel and Doris Budner, what began as the Dallas Jewish Coalition for the Homeless grew from a single-room building providing care for 15 homeless children to an organization that has helped more than 17,000 infants and toddlers cope with the trauma of homelessness.
They offer programs like early childhood development, family support, mental and behavioral support, and a Camp Vogel school program.
“Vogel Alcove, in our 35-year history, focus has always been on the kids, the little ones, infants, toddlers, preschool kids. Our kids are coming from trauma,” said Hughes. “So, at this early age, it’s very important that they have quality early childhood experiences, accessible health, and even mental health services so that they can be successful in life.”
On April 30, Vogel is hosting its 30th Annual Arts Performance Event, featuring country music stars Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black at Gilley’s Dallas. Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black are taking their act, as a married duo, on the road singing as a duo for the first time ever on the Mostly Hits and The Mrs. Tour.
