Covenant Knocks Off First Baptist
Covenant’s goal of a TAPPS district title got off to a promising start on Saturday when the Knights rallied past their nemesis at Miller Field.
Covenant had lost to First Baptist every year since transitioning to the 11-man ranks in 2015. Those four losses came by an average margin of more than 32 points.
So turning the tables against the Saints was significant. The Knights (3-2) trailed 12-7 early in the second quarter before scoring 28 straight points to pull away.
Ben Spangler threw a pair of touchdown passes to Hayden Anderson, including a 77-yarder early in the fourth quarter. Spangler also rushed for a score, as did Blake Brawner, whose second-quarter touchdown plunge put the Knights ahead for good.
Covenant’s Triston Pedigo returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown before Josue Preza threw touchdown passes on back-to-back drives for the Saints (1-4). Preza also ran for a game-high 75 yards.
The Knights will hit the road for their next two games, playing at Muenster Sacred Heart on Friday before a nondistrict tilt against Central Texas Christian on Oct. 11 in Temple.
