Political, Religious Leader to Preach at SMU
Political and religious leader Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II will be guest preaching at Perkins Chapel on Thursday. He will preach during the 11:30 a.m. worship service.
Rep. Cleaver was born in Waxahachie but moved to Kansas City after getting his degree from Prairie View A&M University in 1968.
Rep. Cleaver founded a local chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and became a pastor of the St. James United Methodist Church in 1972.
However, he is probably better known for his role in Kansas City politics. Rep. Cleaver was elected the first black mayor of Kansas City in 1991 after a long history on the city council. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2005.
This worship service is sponsored by Perkins School of Theology Black Seminarians Association. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, representative of the 30th Congressional District of Texas, will join Rep. Cleaver to give opening remarks.
