Sixth-Grader Seeks Publicity For Bone Marrow Drive
I spend a lot of time talking to children. Scratch that. I spend a lot of time talking to one child. My 4-year-old son wakes up jabbering, keeps flapping his lips all day long, and even talks in his sleep. So, thanks to him, I’m well versed in childish conversations.
I’m telling you all this because I got the cutest phone call on Friday afternoon. Kelsey Roberts, a sixth-grader at Greenhill, dialed my direct line (I forgot to ask how she got the number) to seek publicity for her Destination Imagination team.
“Are you familiar with DI?” she asked. OMG. You know I am. LOL.
Kelsey and her teammates have to perform community service — or, in her words, “help a community need” — so they are conducting a registration drive for bone marrow donors. It will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the JCC.
Kelsey said the team chose bone cancer as its cause because Amy Roseman, the mother of team member Robert Roseman, works at DKMS, the largest bone marrow donor center in the world.
“We actually got to meet a patient yesterday,” Kelsey said. “We got to interview her and get to know her.”
And I got to spend just a couple of minutes getting to know Kelsey. I hope that my son will be soon be as well-spoken as her.
