Dallas officials have named Daniel Comeaux the next Dallas police chief and Justin Ball the next chief of Dallas Fire-Rescue.

This move comes after Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert started a national search for candidates in early 2025.

Comeaux began his career at the Houston Police Department in the early 1990s and transitioned to the DEA, carrying out multiple major operations in Houston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

As the newly elected police chief, Comeaux will have to navigate challenging city charter amendments passed last year by Dallas voters, including hiring hundreds more officers, while overseeing multiple departments.

Chief Ball has a bachelor’s degree in fire administration from Texas A&M University and certifications as a Master Firefighter, Aircraft Rescue, and Fire Fighting (ARFF), Fire Officer II, Fire Instructor II, Incident Commander, and Incident Safety Officer.

After almost 28 years with Dallas Fire-Rescue, Ball will assume his role as Dallas’ 18th fire chief, overseeing a $430 million budget and leading roughly 2,200 men and women in responding to fire and emergency medical services.

Comeaux and Ball will formally begin their roles on April 23.
