Highland Park Moving to Class 5A in 2014

Gotcha.

While that headline is technically true, it’s not what you think. Yesterday, the University Interscholastic League approved changes that would split Class 1A Divisions I and II into Class 1A and Class 2A, which bumps up every other classification up one, creating the need to add a Class 6A. There will be six conferences in cross country, football, basketball, academics, one-act play, golf, tennis, and track and field.

The UIL is also adding a third classification for tennis and soccer. The changes will take effect for the 2014-16 realignment.

So now the old joke about Highland Park’s attendance being one less than the cutoff for 5A will have to be adjusted to 6A. That attempt at humor is just a tad bit out of date, considering Highland Park’s the third-biggest school in its own district.

Based on district attendance projections, and with the middle school bursting at the seams, we’re just a few years away from moving up to 6A (and staying there.)

Glad to see the UIL is adding more teams to post-season playoffs. The playoff season is almost as long as the regular season now! Nowadays, a team must be really bad not to qualify for the playoffs. Self-esteem rules!

Not good for smaller academic and arts organizations: speech, choir, band, orchestra, or AcDec. We are going to get crushed!

For most of our kids this competition will be a good thing. Learning to lose is a good life lesson, learning to try harder and work harder comes with getting a few losses. They will go into college and early life that much stronger.
