University Park Selects Library Director

Following a six-month search, University Park has selected Sharon Perry Martin as its new library director.

Martin comes to University Park from Dallas, where she headed up the city’s Dallas and Texas history sections, according to UP spokesman Steve Mace.

“I’m honored to be chosen as library director and I look forward to assisting all those who come through our door,” Martin said in a statement. “During the interview process I toured the building that will house the City’s new library.  I certainly congratulate the Friends of the Library, library patrons, and City leaders for working together to accomplish what will be a wonderful new facility.”

Martin has worked in the Dallas library system since 1995, rising from a branch children’s librarian to her last role, as the Texas/Dallas History, Fine Books, Genealogy, and History/Social Sciences divisions head.

She’ll take over Oct. 10, nine days after the library becomes an official city department. Previously, the library was a separate entity funded by the city and donors. That financial arrangement will not change, but it will now fall under the control of City Hall.

Great. Just what CUP needs, another city employee (to handout books in an age of digital iPads).

Ms. Martin is a great person and excellent librarian. I pity T-Bone (above comment), for not knowing that the real treasures of learning are still at brick and mortar libraries. A great librarian is worth more than money can pay. I envy the University Park library, simply because they have Ms. Martin. She has always gone above and beyond, while helping me get to the information I truly need to find. Bravo University Park on an excellent choice for Director.
