Man Attacks Wife, Turns Knife on Himself

A Highland Park man allegedly attempted to attack his wife early this morning before eventually turning the knife on himself, HP officers said this afternoon.

Sgt. Lance Koppa, a spokesman for Highland Park, said Dina Steele awoke to John Steele standing above her with a knife. After a struggle, John was disarmed by their son and took off to the downstairs kitchen. John then used another item in the house to inflict wounds on himself. After being transported to Baylor Medical Center, John was pronounced dead. Dina Steele is still in stable condition.

Koppa said the attack at this time seems to be a surprise to all parties involved.

It’s going to be very easy to jump to conclusions on this, friends. At least this one time, please don’t. Reserve judgement.

I knew Dina when we worked together probably 20 years ago at KERA. @Jim Swayze, if you’re in touch with her, please tell her Susan, Marlis and Kathy are thinking about her.

Jim, I agree with, and thank you for, your comments and have to add on a very personal note how amazing of a man Rod was to our son Jack in confirmation class. For those that know our family, you know Jack is a severely developmentally disabled 12-year-old. Rod was always kind, loving and embracing of Jack. This is a very sad, unknown tragedy. Our hearts go out to Rob, Dina and their children.

I know the Steeles and, although a dark side can lurk undetected, I cannot imagine Rod and this event in the same paragraph. It HAD to be a brain tumor, Ambien-related, SOMETHING to explain the inexplicable.

My daughter and son are friends of their son. My daughter has spent many evenings over at their home.

Each time she would return from their house she would ALWAYS speak of what an amazing family the Steeles are.

My children are devastated! We are grieving with the family.

I don’t know what caused this but I do know our family will stand beside the Steeles through this and the years to come.

Such a very sad thing to happen to such a wonderful family. Ambien has caused many incidents like this throughout the nation. This drug must be stopped now!! Anyone taking this drug should immediately stop using and I pray that nothing like this happens to any of our Dallas families again! Our hearts and prayers are with the Steele family.

Jim you are completely correct – the last thing the Steele’s need is judgement. They are going through enough and people should be rallying around them, not judging why.
