Mecca Owner Explains The Move
Dallas’ online foodie subculture was abuzz all weekend with the news that the Mecca, a diner that has been on Harry Hines for more than 40 years, will be moving to Lakewood next month. All of those reports quoted managers, but one of our summer interns, Megan Porter, got co-owner Nancy Schillaci on the phone.
Schillaci, a Highland Park resident who bought the Mecca in 2007 with her husband, Michael Sealy, said the building is old and the numerous repairs “eat into all of our profits.”
“As much as we hate to leave it because we’re so nostalgic about it, we just feel like the time was right,” Schillaci said.
Mecca will be taking over the spot on the corner of Live Oak and Skillman streets that was once occupied by the Tipperary Inn. The Gold Rush Cafe’s staff can’t be too happy about this.
The caption of the photo needs to include that they will soon “Whisk” off to their new location.
