Scots Advance Past First Round on Wilson’s Arm
In what turned out to be a dominant performance from lefty Matt Wilson, the Scots (23-10-1) advance into the next round with a 1-0 win over Carrollton Creekview.
Wilson gave an outstanding, complete game performance by only giving up one hit and striking out 10 over seven innings. The junior lefty kept hitters off their feet all night as his breaking ball and on-call command gave the Mustangs’ lineup trouble throughout the game.
“He was around the plate all night long, and he only walked one kid,” said head coach Fred Oliver. “When he’s around the plate and he’s on, he’s hard to beat.”
Wilson wasn’t in the mood for giving second chances as the Mustangs threatened a few times with runners in scoring position. He struck out the side in the fourth with two men on and had back-to-back strikeouts to strand a man at second in the fifth.
But the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third, when center fielder Mark Gottsacker tripled to right to score left fielder David Hughes, who started the inning with a lead-off single to center. The Scots peppered seven hits over the game, but stranded eight, once with bases loaded in the fourth.
After Thursday’s win, the Scots will take their nine-game win streak into next week’s playoff match against the winner of Spruce-North Dallas.
