Buying Beer in University Park. Pre-Showdown Question.
Concerning the beer and wine thing. Maybe I don’t get it. I thought that even if this beauty passes there couldn’t be package stores. I mean, if I’m wrong then party all night long but I thought it would just allow Tom Thumb-ish places to sell beer and wine. I must be mistaken because the DMN reports this.
One of the measures on the November ballot would end the club requirement for customers to purchase cocktails with meals in restaurants. A second measure would allow package stores to sell beer and wine only, for off-premises consumption.
I’m so glad someone else noticed this HUGE mistake in the Dallas Morning News. The upcoming propositions are very clear, no package stores will be allowed in UP. We pointed this out to the reporter, but she refused to make a correction. So much for journalistic integrity at the DMN!
Phew! For a minute, I thought we’d be rolling in Lotto tickets and pickled pigs feet here in the Bubble.
Look at those prices in the window. And the parking is at the door. Personally, I like to go “slumming” in places like that. Do you think UP code enforcement would let Harry open a franchise here?
The pic makes me laugh! Just say no, UP.
Yeah, what’s next, a Sigel’s like the one at Cole and Fitzhugh? That place might as well be a homeless shelter, with its $30 Allen Bros. filets and bottles of Opus One. My heroin dealer told me to avoid such places.
@Max, If the package stores deal is not the “second proposition” that Hall is quoted talking about, what is?
Package stores sell liquor, beer and wine. The second proposition only applies to beer and wine, which are usually only sold in grocery stores. Only restaurants will sell the demon liquor drink, which they already do, just minus the club membership.
Avid Reader- Proposition 1 would allow the sale of beer and wine only in grocery stores. No package stores would be allowed. Proposition 2 allows UP restaurants to continue serving beer wine and mixed drinks as they have done for decades only without having to join a private club. Here is exactly what the ballot will look like November 2nd: http://www.dalcoelections.org/nov22010/ballots/19.pdf
Page 3 contains both Propositions
@Max, What is the exact wording on the proposition that is being voted on?
Sorry Max, I typed it in, got called away and when I came back I forgot to refresh before hitting “submit”.
With that having been said, the reason that the reporter wouldn’t retract is the proposition says nothing about prohibiting package stores.
Proposition No. 1
“The legal sale of beer and wine for
off-premise consumption only.”
James- TABC guidelines state only what will be allowed with the implication that anything else is prohibited. On their website Proposition 1 is described as follows:
“The legal sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption only.” Beer, malt liquor and wine in a grocery or convenience store. http://www.tabc.state.tx.us/local_option_elections/election_issues.asp
They use the specific words “in a grocery or convenience store” to avoid confusing voters. Since package stores also sell liquor, they would be forbidden in University Park. The DMN reporter should absolutely make a retraction because what she reported is false.
Since package stores sell liquor, they would not be allowed in University Park.
Thanks Max, that clears it up.
great work Max, thank you!
What difference does any of this make? We have liquor stores on every single border of the PC, NW HWY, Preston, Lovers, Southwestern, Lomo Alto – and on and on. What are we afraid of happening if they sell beer at the Snider Plaza Thumb? If we don’t have to fill out the stupid membership for our margarita? If the liquor store moves two doors down across the border line of our precious burg? I just don’t get the ruckus.
Is the liquor store at the corner of Preston and Weldon Howell not in UP? Why can you buy beer at Flying Fish without a hassle, but not at Snuffers? Is there some weird city boundary there that I am just ignorant to?
@Justmyopinion: Correct, that store is not in UP. That side of Preston north of Colgate is in Dallas, not UP.
I just hope I never have to see Harry’s package!
