Hey Moms, HPHS Students Have a Message For You
Dear Moms,
The high school students are contacting me, they want you to follow the rules. See, Scots pay a fee for their assigned parking spaces and they’re already finding it hard to pull into that designated spot because your super mom van is in it. They have two problems with this.
- They want the spot they paid for.
- They’re afraid that friends who know which space belongs to them will think they’re all of the sudden driving a van with stickers all over it.
I’ve told them to snap some pics.

Before school started, I (and I assume lots of other volunteers) received an email about parking in the garage. It explained that the garage was being “re-done” to add more volunteer spots. Well, that has not happened… yet. But, I bet some volunteers are parking in the spots that the email indicated would be volunteer spots! Not sure if the HS assigned those spots to students or not.
One more tip about parking at the high school: there is a student that will begin driving himself this month, he is in a wheelchair and there is a handicapped space that is reserved for him – he paid the usual fee for a parking space, and that space is his. If you park in it “just for a minute” he will be unable to park somewhere else and exit his van – that also means the space that is marked off BESIDE the handicapped space, that’s where his ramp opens into. I’ve seen cars parked in that spot, or the space beside it too many times to count. DON’T PARK IN THE HANDICAPPED SPACES people, you are going to make a good kid late to class!
Emails only go to those who registered and supplied an email address. Herein lies a big part of the parking and carpool problem. Many of the Dads don’t get the school emails. I’ll bet most of the Dads have never read the carpool “rules”. Moms, explain to your husbands the rules before you send them out on duty. Else, there might be a picture of your car, and your presumed guilt.
I never received an email regarding parking for volunteers. I parked in a numbered spot last week–oops!! I had no idea where to park and circled around. Good to know….
All very good info, considering I also did not receive the email about parking and I would have parked in any one of those numbered spots. Poor kids!!! On another note, I’d like to email Merritt on a separate issue plaguing me, anyone have her direct email? Can’t seem to locate it! Thanks 🙂

WOW!! Merritt can give all kinds of info out but not her email. Hmmmmm.
Guess in the end, if we can’t park on the side streets, have no volunteer parking in the parking garage, then what is the correct place to go?

I’m pretty sure there are spots labeled Volunteer Parking on the first floor of the garage. I do not understand why this would be difficult to follow. At least there were last Friday when I drove by them. Not a problem for me though since my spot is on the top floor and ridiculously far away.
Here’s the info I received in an email earlier this month:
Now about parking…..volunteers are no longer going to be able to use the handicap spots on the first floor of the parking garage. There are 24 new volunteers spots on the first floor as you enter the garage– the first 12 on the left and the first 12 on the right. They will not be painted to say volunteer right away (still trying to finish all the big construction) but they will be volunteer spots for us to use.
@anon – great way to clearly illustrate your sexist view of dads! I have seen moms in escalades chatting to “the girls” in the middle of the street oblivious to everyone else around them on too many occasions to believe that dads (who are obviously clueless, uninvolved, and out of the loop) are “a big part of the parking and carpool problem.”
Is parking allowed in the number spots after 3:30 when school gets out?
@HP Dad, you are reading way, way too much into my comment. I was commenting about the school process for gathering emails and disseminating information. Lots of Dads do not get the blast emails and thus don’t know the rules. I’m one of them who don’t get the emails. I said “many” Dads. I did not say all. That is about the email process.
Now, with respect to carpool, I’ve worked carpool duty at two elementary schools. What I’ve seen is, based on anecdotal evidence, when Dads break the rules, it is often (not always, but often) because they don’t know what the rules are. I don’t know about MIS or HPHS, but I suspect similar.
What happened to the full-time security person who used to monitor the volunteer spots during cafeteria volunteer arrival time? She once tracked me down before I got into the building and made me move my car.
I only work there once a month, when my day isn’t a holiday. I can never remember where we are allowed to park so having her directing traffic 10:20-10:55a or so was very effective for compliance.
Aren’t there some un-numbered spots out front? Seems to me there are.
@Question, I believe it’s fine to park in #’ed spots after 3:30pm. Many of the kids that are in the garage go move their cars around before they start they’re after school activities. The band kids usually bring their cars around to the lot outside the band hall.
Do they assign spots in the so called “teachers” lot to the teachers by numbers?
Maybe HPPC and their “Parking Plaza” can help.
@HP Dad – my son told me it’s called a Parkie Princess Roadblock. It can be quite an obstacle in the morning trying to get the kids to school.
