Richardson Races Past Lady Scots
Despite a scrappy effort by Highland Park, Richardson was simply too quick and too physical for the Lady Scots in a battle of the top two girls basketball teams in District 10-6A on Friday.
The Lady Eagles surged to a 68-54 victory to remain unbeaten in league play, while HP suffered its first defeat. The Lady Scots, however, remain in sole possession of second place in the standings at the halfway point of the schedule.
Four players scored in double figures for state-ranked Richardson, led by the guard tandem of Nautica Grant (19 points) and Arleighshya McElroy (16 points). The Lady Eagles (22-4, 7-0) grabbed a double-digit lead midway through the first quarter and never relinquished it.
It was the closest margin of victory in seven district games for Richardson, although that might not be much consolation for the Lady Scots (14-8, 6-1), who had their four-game winning streak snapped.
Mikaela Read and Eve Loewe scored 10 points apiece to pace a balanced attack for HP, while Julia Jenevein added nine points and Emily Weisfeld had eight.
The Lady Scots will begin the second half of the 10-6A schedule on Tuesday when they host North Mesquite.
