HP Trades Wolverines For Leopards in Playoffs
The Highland Park baseball team hopes for a little less drama this weekend in the second round of the Class 4A Region II playoffs.
The Scots (22-12) were no-hit in the first game of their bi-district series against Frisco Wakeland last weekend, but they fought back to tie the series, then rallied to win a third and deciding game in eight innings for its first postseason win over the Wolverines in four tries.
Now, HP will turn its attention to Adamson, with the opener of a best-of-three series slated for 7:30 p.m. tonight at Scotland Yard. The second game will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, also at Scotland Yard, with a third game to follow if necessary.
Unlike a week ago, the Scots will enter this weekend as a heavy favorite, with a pitching rotation that includes standouts Layne Looney and Ryan Buss, against one of the former coaching stops of first-year HP head coach Travis Yoder.
The scrappy Leopards (15-4) won the 11-4A regular-season title and defeated Thomas Jefferson 14-2 in a single-game playoff in the bi-district round. However, they haven’t fared well this season outside of the Dallas ISD ranks, despite a victory over Class 5A DeSoto in a tournament.
The winner of the series will face either Prosper or Woodrow Wilson next week in the regional quarterfinals.
