Scheffler Makes History on Links
Highland Park senior Scottie Scheffler won his third consecutive Class 4A state golf title on Tuesday in Austin, capping a stellar high school career for the Scots.
Scheffler was in control from the start of the two-day event at the University of Texas Golf Club, starting with a round of 6-under par 66 on Monday. It was the only sub-70 round by any golfer in the tournament.
On Tuesday, he remained comfortably ahead following a 72, giving him a six-shot edge over runner-up William Martinez of Austin Vandegrift.
However, Vandegrift topped HP by 16 strokes in the team standings to prevent a repeat for the Scots of their 2013 crown. After a five-shot lead following the first round, Vandegrift pulled away on Tuesday, finishing with four golfers among the top seven overall.
Other players for the Scots at state included Cash Carter (76-75—151), Jake Potter (78-77—155), Charlie Click (77-81—158), and Drake Turnbull (78-82—160).
On the girls side, HP’s Layne Anderson tied for 17th place with a score of 81-84—165, which was 21 strokes behind champion Cheyenne Knight of Aledo. Anderson was competing as an individual qualifier.
