Is Cupcake Machine Finicky, or Is It Just Me?

Don't these look good?
Don’t these look good? Not when you’re freezing your sweet patootie off.

During our Christmas break, my son and I patronized the Sprinkles cupcake machine in The Plaza at Preston Center for the first time. As you might imagine, it was cold that night, so my patience was thin by the time we got to the front of the line. I swiped my debit card twice before I figured out the machine takes credit cards only. So I bought him a cupcake with an American Express card. But when I tried to buy a second cupcake for my wife and I to share (because, apparently, you can only pay for one cupcake at a time), the machine declined the same American Express card — twice. So I gave up and walked away, even though the father of the family waiting behind us encouraged me to give it another try. Has anybody else had a similarly frustrating experience, or should we chalk this up to operator error?

I intended to take the boy during the day, but other activities precluded a trip to the cupcake machine, which, to a 5-year-old, sounds magical.
