Chick in a Ferrari Scores the Total Rock Star Parking Space
Parking in a designated handicap space is rude and illegal but it also speaks volumes about the driver’s sense of entitlement. The other day this car was parked in the handicap space at Chick-Fil-A on Hillcrest. The parking lot was jam-packed and a woman who needed the spot (and had a tag to use it) circled the area a few times and then sat nearby in her mini van waiting for the Ferrari owner to leave. It made me sad to see the physically challenged woman unable to go about her business until the able-bodied person was good and ready to go.
And I don’t know but something about it being a Ferrari made it worse.
I whole-heartedly agree although it’s not just the Ferrari drivers. I’ve seen a Tahoe, Hummer, Toyota Corolla, Ford Explorer all do the same thing. Most of these people live in the University Park area as I have seen them drop their kids off at HPMS. I don’t know what makes them so special but I’d really like to take them into the alley for a one-sided discussion let by me! I’ve seen them park as well as sit idle while their kid runs in. Either way, it’s ridiculously pompous. They are probably the same people that turn right in the left-turn only lane heading west down Binkley from Hillcrest. UP has had a cop park there a few times the past month pointing out the ignorance of those but when the cop is gone, they return to their ill-will ways. What are they teaching their kids…it’s okay as long as no one is using the handicap space at the time and it’s okay to break the law when there isn’t a cop around to enforce it? I’d expect more from such a high-income demographic.
So freaking rude!! And such a humongous ticket if she had gotten caught. Too bad Chief Adams wasn’t picking up some nuggets for dinner that day.
Some say this is what keys are made for!!
I love you, Merritt. I really do. I hope you know how much people appreciate the constant vigilance you’ve shown on this issue.
This type of conduct leaves me fuming too. I have always wondered, can you call 311 (or 911) to report a car illegally parked like this, so the perpetrator can be towed or ticketed? Maybe you can ask Chief Adams?
The best way to get the police to respond is to call the individual precinct. If you call 311 it takes something like 2 days to be processed. Obviously, you don’t want to call 911 for this sort of thing. I’ve been meaning to put together a list of phone numbers on a map, but, well, I’m lazy!
I’ve seen an aerobics instructor at the Park Cities zip into a handicap space every Saturday morning, reach down and attach a handicap hang-tag to his rear-view mirror, and then bound out of his car and into the Y. Shamless.

Astonishing how people reserve their civic passion and outspokenness on a mundane issue like parking spaces and lane usage. Yawn.
