How Much Fun Is ‘Mean Girls?’ The Limit Does Not Exist

We all know and love Mean Girls as a movie, but I don’t think any of us thought we’d ever be lucky enough to experience the classic film in musical form. Well, for Dallas, it’s our lucky two weeks, as Mean Girls the musical will be at Music Hall at Fair Park until May 15.

I was lucky enough to snag a couple of tickets for myself and, of course, my sister, because who else do you bring with you to see a musical of Mean Girls?

I’ll get to talking about the show itself, but I’d be remiss if I wrote about it without even mentioning the glitz and glamor of the attendees– and all the pink outfits. It was the cherry on top that we went on a Wednesday, because, as we all know, on Wednesdays we wear pink.

And just like the fashion, the musical was visually exciting and just overall fun. The writers made sure to leave nothing out when it came to favorite scenes, making the show a lighthearted crowd-pleaser. Though I don’t consider myself a lover of musicals (although I certainly don’t hate them), I found myself engrossed in the performances and laughing more than I expected to.

Though the musical did stay pretty true to the film, I couldn’t help but notice that they did give it a little update so it fit better within the times. There were mentions of Instagram, hashtags, and even a whole scene where Regina George’s embarrassing moment went viral across social media. At first I wasn’t a fan of this, but as the show went on, I saw that it was kind of necessary and even allowed for new, interesting storylines to develop. Also, many times, it felt like the show was mocking social media and how people use it. That was probably the best part.

Keep in mind that you probably won’t talk away from the show humming any of the songs– in my opinion, they were nothing special. However, with what they had to work with, the cast brought their A-game and were incredibly talented. Eric Huffman, who played Damian Hubbard, deserved a shoutout for one number in particular, “Stop,” and the tap routine that accompanied it. As a former dancer, this scene had a special place in my heart. Other performers that stood out included Morgan Ashley Bryant as the adorable and bubbly Karen Smith, and the vocals of Mary Kate Morrissey as Janis Sarkisian.
