Wakeland Stops Playoff Run for HP Girls
A familiar nemesis handed Highland Park its first loss of the girls soccer season, and ended the Lady Scots’ hopes of returning to the state tournament.
Frisco Wakeland overwhelmed HP and secured a 3-1 victory in the Class 5A Region II final on Saturday at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton.
Wakeland eliminated the Lady Scots (22-1-3) for the second straight season, and third time since 2018. Like last year, HP was unbeaten entering the matchup with the Wolverines (21-1-4). Their postseason rivalry has spanned the past several seasons, although it won’t continue in the immediate future with HP jumping to Class 6A next year.
Sophia Pehr scored twice on long free kicks in the second half as the Wolverines pulled away after leading 1-0 at halftime. Kylie Bell scored a late goal for HP to prevent the shutout.
The Lady Scots — who hold the most state titles of any soccer program in Texas — continued their 10-year stretch of advancing to at least the fourth round of the playoffs when they beat Frisco in a shootout on Friday.
Saturday’s defeat was the final game in an HP uniform for several seniors, including Bell and fellow captains Parker Hart and Elise Needleman.
