HP Soccer Teams Set for Playoff Runs
For the past two decades, Highland Park has been the most decorated girls soccer program in the state’s second-highest enrollment classification.
Before they move to Class 6A next season, the Lady Scots would like to give themselves a parting gift in the form of an eighth state championship trophy.
Their quest will begin on Friday with a Class 5A Region II bi-district matchup against Cleburne on Friday in Grand Prairie.
After winning the District 13-5A title during the regular season, HP (21-0-2) kept its unbeaten record intact with a 1-0 victory over 6A power Rockwall on Tuesday in a playoff warmup game at Highlander Stadium. Elise Needleman scored for the Lady Scots.
HP has allowed just one goal in its past 10 games combined. Cleburne is the fourth-place team from District 14-5A. The winner will face either Lufkin or Longview Pine Tree next week in the area round.
Meanwhile, the HP boys also will kick off postseason play on Friday with a bi-district game against Corsicana at Highlander Stadium.
The Scots (16-2-3) won a District 13-5A crown in unbeaten fashion and will look to avenge an early exit from the playoffs a year ago. They haven’t lost since Jan. 14.
Corsicana survived a tiebreaker against Waco University for fourth place in District 14-5A on Tuesday to clinch a postseason berth. The winner of Friday’s contest will meet either Hallsville or Jacksonville in the second round.
