Join Mike Rawlings at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library

Empowering the whole family to read daily, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings will kick off the 2018 Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge this Thursday.

The event begins at 10 a.m. at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library. Parking is available in the Library’s underground garage off Wood Street.

Presented by Epsilon, the Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge is a free 10-week program from June 2-Aug. 11 that encourages a lifelong habit of reading. Open to everyone from tots and teens to older and single adults, the Challenge rewards daily reading with fantastic prizes and encourages a lifelong habit of reading.

For 45 years, the Dallas Public Library’s summer reading program has encouraged kids to read during the summer months. In 1997, the program became known as the Mayor’s Summer Reading Program and has since served more than 300,000 children.

The Challenge also offers plenty of interactive opportunities to keep kids engaged and excited throughout the summer – from free books, prizes, and grand-prize experiences, to weekly STEAM activities at all 29 Dallas Public Library locations.

Knowing that children model the actions of the adults and family members in their lives, the Challenge is open to all ages. Any reading materials are acceptable including books, e-books, audiobooks, newspapers, and magazines. (Websites and video games do not qualify.)

Sign up is open at all Dallas Public Library locations or online at dallaslibrary.org/msrc.

Presenting sponsor is Epsilon. Other sponsors and partners include Albertson’s/Tom Thumb, Cigna, Friends of the Dallas Public Library, Hilltop Securities, KPMG, Sammons Foundation, SMU and The Dallas Foundation.
