You Asked About the History of Abductions in the Park Cities

The theme of the week is obvious. Several readers have asked about the history of actual abductions in the Park Cities. I shared part of the answer in today’s podcast.

In a meeting yesterday with UPPD’s Captain Leon Holman, he told me that in University Park there have been 3 non-parental abductions (one of them was a young adult, the other two were children). All of them happened in the 1970s.

  1. A young child was abducted by his grandmother and to Holman’s knowledge, the child was never found.
  2. A Snider Plaza shop owner’s daughter (Holman thought she was about 16 at the time) was kidnapped and returned unharmed.
  3. The well-known case of Mandy Dealey. She was abducted and held for 60 hours, her captors were sentenced to 5,005 years each.

In Highland Park, Marty Nevil confirmed there have been 2 child abductions in their history, both were rescued and both occurred in the late 1970s, one was being held for ransom.

So that thing we say about “it’s not like it used to be.” Well, I guess that’s a good thing.

Really interesting post, Merritt. I don’t remember any of these, even though I was growing up here at the time. It is indeed a good thing that it’s not like it used to be.

@mk–I agree. Great reporting, Merritt. Now get back to writing columns and pissing people off.
