Rise and Shine, Park Cities (1-28-11)

1. If you take time to clean out the old inbox, you’ll occasionally stumble upon a gem. Last week, I received a press release that said the Rees-Jones Foundation has donated $15 million to the Perot Museum of Nature & Science. Impressive, right? Especially when you consider that the foundation created by University Park residents Jan and Trevor Rees-Jones gave $10 million to the museum in 2009. Consequently, museum leaders will name two major halls in their honor: the Rees-Jones Foundation Dynamic Earth Hall and the Jan and Trevor Rees-Jones Exhibition Hall. Well, yeah. The museum is scheduled to open in 2013.

2. Speaking of museums, you have only two more weekends to view “Breaking New Ground: Presenting the George W. Bush Presidential Center,” which is on display at the Meadows Museum through Super Bowl Sunday. The exhibit previews some of the items that will be displayed at the center, including the pistol taken from Saddam Hussein upon his capture in Iraq and the bullhorn President Bush used to address Ground Zero workers three days after 9/11.

3. There are some unique musical events going on at Park Cities churches this weekend. At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, University Park United Methodist Church is hosting a Texas Early Music Project concert. And at 6 p.m. Sunday, Highland Park United Methodist Church is hosting the Park Cities Organists’ Showcase. This is sort of like an all-star game for organists. Check out Page 2A of today’s paper for key stats on all the players.
