Araiza Boosts Jesuit, WTW Advances Again

Clyde Araiza scored with less than two minutes remaining in the game to lift Jesuit Dallas to a thrilling 3-2 win over Denton Guyer in the Class 6A Division II boys soccer playoffs on Wednesday in Plano.

The game-winner, assisted by Cooper McGough, was the second goal of the game for Araiza, who also scored seven minutes earlier to give the Rangers a 2-0 advantage in the area round matchup. However, the lead wasn’t safe.

The Wildcats rallied to tie the score with two tallies in a four-minute span, both by Alex Leon de Mahalgaes, setting up the thrilling finish.

Mario Zamora found the net on a header in the first half to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Jesuit controlled the run of play before halftime. But that was on Tuesday, before the game was suspended for 24 hours due to inclement weather.

The Rangers (19-1) will carry a 15-game winning streak into a Region I semifinal matchup against Byron Nelson on Friday in Coppell.

In other playoff action on Wednesday, the W.T. White boys knocked off defending Class 5A state champion Midlothian 2-1 in overtime at Franklin Stadium.

The victory in the 5A Division I area round keeps the Longhorns (17-0-3) unbeaten on the season and propels them into a Region II semifinal against Prosper Walnut Grove on Friday.

On the girls side, W.T. White was eliminated 7-0 by powerhouse Midlothian, which has won 18 straight games and outscored its last seven opponents by a combined margin of 45-0.
