Scots Survive Against Lufkin in Playoffs
Highland Park held off a furious late comeback by Lufkin to keep its boys basketball season alive by the slimmest of margins on Friday.
The Scots earned a 53-52 victory in a hard-fought Class 5A Division I area round game in Athens. They advance to meet West Mesquite on Tuesday in the Region II semifinals in Forney.
HP led by double digits in the third quarter before being outscored 23-12 in the fourth by the Panthers (34-3). It was the first win in four tries this season for the Scots (27-7) in games decided by three or fewer points.
It’s also the fifth consecutive year in the 5A classification in which HP has advanced at least three rounds deep in the playoffs. The winner of Tuesday’s clash with the Wranglers (28-3) will face either Frisco Heritage or Red Oak on Friday in the regional final.
