Bush Center Honors Quiet WWII Heroism

By Isabella Castillo / Contributor

The George W. Bush Presidential Center will honor the groundbreaking contributions of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, nicknamed The Six Triple Eight, on Feb. 12 during an Engage at the Bush Center event presented by NexPoint.

The program follows the release of the Netflix film The Six Triple Eight, which tells the story of WWII’s only Women’s Army Corps unit of color and “the quiet heroism of everyday individuals.” Despite racist and misogynistic treatment, the women of the Six Triple Eight served their country with honor and distinction, managing to clear a backlog of 17 million pieces of soldier mail in just three months.

The Bush Center conversation will feature former U.S. Ambassador Nicole Avant, a best-selling author and one of the producers of the Netflix film; Milauna Jackson, who plays Captain Campbell in the film; and retired Army Col. Edna Cummings, an advocate whose work has led to two recognitions for the battalion: the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion Monument and the Congressional Gold Medal.
