NEWS: Seven Presidential Leadership Scholars from Dallas

Seven Dallasites are among the 60-member ninth class of Presidential Leadership Scholars.

The program, which is a collaboration among the presidential centers of George W. Bush, William J. Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Lyndon B. Johnson, allows scholars to learn about leadership through the presidential experiences of the four former presidents.

SCHOOLS: Hockaday Sophomore Wins Congressional App Challenge

Hockaday sophomore Anika Gopal was named the winner of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge in Texas’ 24th District.

Gopal created EyeSpy, an app that can detect if a driver is falling asleep.

NEWS: Second Chapter Bookstore Ends Successful Pop-Up

The Second Chapter Bookstore broke records during its 90-day pop-up, which wrapped up on Jan. 20.

The store’s revenue was up 41% over last year. It sold more than 4,500 books in 1,000 transactions, said Katharine Friguletto, a Friends of the University Park Public Library board member and book sales committee chair.

SCHOOLS: UP Elementary Students Satisfy Their Book Cravings With New Vending Machine

There’s a new vending machine at University Park Elementary School, and it’s packed with enough stories to satisfy any student’s sweet tooth.

Book choices include kid hits The Duckling Gets a Cookie and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, as well as page-turners about Barbie and the escapades of Dog Man, a part-canine, part-police officer superhero.

Students will have the opportunity to earn books for either good behavior or strong reading habits.
