Big Texas BBQ Event Benefits Rise School

TouchDown Club of Dallas’ annual appetizer and rib cookoff — Big Texas BBQ — is coming to the Cotton Bowl for the first time in eight years.

Big Texas BBQ benefiting the Ashford Rise School of Dallas will feature up to 60 teams competing for best ribs, appetizers, and best tailgate, as well as a kid’s zone, food trucks, and live music headlined by Gary P. Nunn from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 21 at the Cotton Bowl. The event will also feature a kid’s bakeoff, where the six classes from the Rise School will each create a dessert to pair with a selected ice cream from Howdy Homemade Ice Cream.

The Rise School of Dallas provides early childhood education services for children aged six months to six years with and without disabilities.

“It’s spending an afternoon cooking BBQ, eating with family and friends, listening to great Texas music and most importantly – raising money for the Rise kids. We’re so excited to be hosting Big Texas BBQ at Fair Park this year and hope it continues to grow into one of North Texas’ signature barbecue events,” said Charles Polansky, Big Texas BBQ Chairman.

The barbecue competition will be judged by celebrity judges including Tootsie Tomanetz, pitmaster of Snow’s BBQ and BBQ Hall of Famer featured on Netflix’s Chef’s Table, Texas Monthly barbecue editor Daniel Vaughn, Slow Bone BBQ owner and pitmaster Jeffrey Hobbs, Maple & Motor owner Jack Perkins, DWP BBQ owner and pitmaster Doug Pickering, and Sammy’s BBQ owner and pitmaster Marshall Pritchard.

The event is free for anyone under 21, but tickets are available here.
