Scots Have State Hopes at Regional Meet
Dozens of Highland Park athletes will compete this weekend for spots at the Class 5A state track and field meet.
The Scots will be well represented in both the boys and girls divisions at the two-day Region II meet in Arlington, which begins on Friday.
John Rutledge earned the only gold medal for the HP boys at the area meet in Mesquite with a time of 20.88 seconds in the 200 meters.
Luke Herring (110 hurdles and 300 hurdles) and Jeffrey Tubbs-Jimenez (800 and 1,600) each advanced in multiple events. Other individual qualifiers for the regional meet for the Scots are Mac Kemp (400), William Jaudes (3,200), Thomas Jackman (shot put), and Hunter Thornton (pole vault).
Meanwhile, the HP girls had three area champions — Kayla Dickerson (800), Sara Cavey (3,200), and Callie DeSchryver (high jump). Cavey also will head to regionals in the 1,600.
The Lady Scots have several other individual regional qualifiers, too, including Ellie Preston (800 and 1,600), Savannah Hinze (100 hurdles and 300 hurdles), Alli Grace Ott (3,200), Caroline Scott (800), Emory Rhodes (100 hurdles), Mason Prather (discus), Hattie Speicher (long jump), and Ailey Fidler (pole vault).
At least the top two finishers in each event during Saturday’s finals will advance to the 5A state meet on May 13 in Austin.
