Lady Scots Keep Pace Atop District 13-5A

With its defensive performance on Tuesday, the Highland Park girls basketball team might have made its football counterparts jealous.

The Lady Scots moved one step closer to clinching a share of the District 13-5A title with a 69-7 thrashing of last-place West Mesquite, which didn’t make a field goal until the third quarter.

Paris Lauro and Maddie Heiss scored 14 points apiece to lead a balanced attack for HP, which remarkably led 37-1 at halftime. In their prior game, the Lady Scots (22-9, 11-1) pulled away for a 45-30 road win over Forney on Jan. 28, with Lauro and Riley Mae Herrod splitting game-high scoring honors with 14 points.

HP is scheduled to play its home finale at 11:30 a.m. Saturday against Crandall — rescheduled from Friday due to impending winter weather — before wrapping up the regular season on Feb. 8 at North Forney.

On the boys side, HP stretched its winning streak to 10 games with a lopsided 61-24 victory at West Mesquite on Tuesday. The Scots (22-4, 9-1) have won each of their last seven contests by margins of at least 25 points.

Coleson Messer paced three HP players in double figures with 13 points, followed by Rhodes Crow with 12 and Dylan Walker with 11. In a 75-47 triumph over Forney on Jan. 28, Camp Wagner tallied a game-high 12 points, with Messer and Walker adding 11 apiece as part of a balanced effort.

The Scots are slated to travel to Crandall on Saturday before returning home on Feb. 8 against North Forney.
