Lions Earn Emotional Homecoming Win

St. Mark’s capped a tumultuous week with a homecoming victory.

After an Oct. 20 tornado caused significant damage to the campus, school officials canceled classes all week, and the Lions were forced to relocate their practices to a makeshift field at Hockaday.

Then came Friday, when homecoming festivities were held on the opposing team’s field, with Greenhill graciously accommodating and welcoming St. Mark’s under the circumstances — removing the “G” logo from the center of the field and displaying banners to commemorate the occasion.

The motivated Lions snapped a four-game losing streak with a 25-0 victory over the Hornets in an SPC divisional matchup at Brinkmann Field.

Anthony Andrews threw a touchdown pass and also ran for a score as St. Mark’s pulled away in the second half. Andrews completed 21 of 36 throws for 191 yards while rushing for a game-high 51 yards on 13 carries.

Kasen Roberson scored the only touchdown of the first half on a short run, and Colin Campbell added a pair of field goals for the Lions (3-4). Conor Duffy punctuated the win with a 17-yard scoring catch in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, the St. Mark’s defense intercepted two passes and limited the struggling Hornets (1-8) to 109 total yards.

Greenhill suffered its eighth straight defeat and has scored an average of just 5.4 points per game during that span. Sophomore quarterback Bennett Broaddus made his first varsity start, connecting on 14 of 26 throws for 108 yards.

The Hornets will host Casady in their season finale next week, looking for their second win over an Oklahoma school this season. The Lions will wrap up their campaign by traveling to face rival ESD.
