Welch Caps Ursuline Career With Gold

Ursuline senior Elise Welch finished her decorated high school distance-running career with gold and bronze medals at the TAPPS state track and field meet on Saturday in Waco.

Welch, who will run in college at Oklahoma, won the Class 6A girls 3,200 meters in 11 minutes, 15.92 seconds. Her freshman teammate Amanda Hogan took the 1,600 in 5:15.05, with Welch finishing third. Ursuline’s Hannah Fee was the runner-up in the high jump.

Parish Episcopal senior Kahlil Overton earned a silver medal in the boys 400 in 49.89 seconds, and his twin brother Cameron placed second in the 200 in 21.95 seconds.

At the 3A level, Covenant junior Jack Rowland was the state champion in the boys 800 in a time of 2:03.54, with junior teammate Hogan Hurley taking the silver.

In both the girls 800 and the 1,600, Covenant senior Emma Kackley was the runner-up, just ahead of freshman teammate Sophie Davis in third. Kackley also was a part of Covenant’s winning 4×400 relay team, along with Ellie Kackley, Maggie Taylor, and Olivia Hill.

Covenant senior Cole Sellers easily won the 300 hurdles in 40.61 seconds, while freshman William Peters was third in the 3,200. Sellers also took gold in the 4×400 relay with teammates Rowland, Jack Peterson, and Arthur Flores.

Cambridge senior Jasmine Jobe won a silver medal in the Class 2A girls 400.
