MANSFIELD — Just call Claire Polak, Cali Brewer, Priscilla Wongso, and Abby Dalton “the closers.”

The 400 freestyle relay quartet finished second to help Ursuline secure a runner-up finish in the girls team standings at the TAPPS 6A state swim meet on Saturday. The Bears entered the last event in third place.

“I’m so proud of my eight swimmers,” said Ursuline head coach Jeff Girard. “We had a phenomenal, hard-fought meet. We didn’t have the numbers to go after [Houston] St. Agnes, but the girls wanted second.”

The Bears left Mansfield ISD Natatorium with 230 points, two points ahead of third-place Bishop Lynch. St. Agnes won the team title. Junior Priscilla Wongso took home a trio of gold medals in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay.

“I was very proud of our team and the energy we had throughout the meet,” Wongso said. “It was a group effort. We fought hard until the last second, and it was worth it in the end.”

Girard praised the work ethic of Wongso, who teamed with Polak, Brewer, and freshman Arianne Tsioutsias in the 200 free relay.

“I’m proud of the work she has put in up to this point,” Girard said. “She earned Swimmer of the Meet, but more importantly, we fought as a team, together. It took everyone swimming hard for us to be successful.”
