Dallas’ Youth Curfew Will Expire For Now, but the Conversation Isn’t Over

A Dallas ordinance some council members and local leaders said disproportionately targeted minority youth has expired.

Known as the youth curfew ordinance, which required youth to be off the streets at 11 p.m. weekdays and midnight on the weekends, was allowed to expire when it came time for its three-year renewal. At the time, City Manager T.C. Broadnax said police were going to see how things went without the curfew, and then reassess, the Dallas Morning News reported.

While some council members expressed disdain with the ordinance “over-policing” and causing racial disparities for things like drug offenses, District 13 council member Jennifer Gates said, “if there is over-policing, it should be sent to her district. That’s what she says her constituents tell her they want,” D Magazine reported in FrontBurner, its local news blog.
