Award-Winning Journalist To Speak at Trailblazer Awards

Award-winning journalist and native Texan Tamron Hall will be the keynote speaker at the 2018 Trailblazer Awards Luncheon.

The event, which will take place Sept. 26, also will honor president of Paul Quinn College Michael J. Sorrell as the recipient of its Trailblazer award.

The annual Texas Trailblazer Awards Luncheon’s funds support The Family Place, a non-profit organization that provides counseling, housing, and skills for survivors of domestic violence so they can become independent while fostering community engagement.

“We are very fortunate to have Tamron Hall as this year’s Texas Trailblazer Luncheon speaker,” says Amy Turner, Texas Trailblazer Award Luncheon Co-Chair. “She is a true partner and advocate in the fight against domestic violence. Through her personal experiences, she has been able to shed light on the issue. We are grateful for her generosity, and lending us her voice at this year’s luncheon.”

Tamron has enjoyed a prolific career in broadcast journalism, she has been the host of Deadline: Crime with Tamron Hall on Investigation Discovery since September 2013 and was a part of the NBC News team as a co-host of NBC News’ TODAY and anchor of MSNBC Live with Tamron Hall.

She received the 2015 Edward R. Murrow Award for Reporting: Hard News in Network Television for her segment on domestic violence as part of TODAY’s “Shine a Light” series. She has also hosted several special reports for MSNBC and NBC News including “Education Nation: Teacher Town Hall,” which was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2011, and she served as a correspondent for the NBC News special “The Inauguration of Barack Obama,” which won an Emmy for Outstanding Live Coverage in October 2010.

Michael J. Sorrell is the longest-serving President at Paul Quinn College, a small, private, minority institution in Dallas, and has received countless awards and accomplishments for his efforts.

“It’s an honor to announce Michael J. Sorrell as this year’s Trailblazer Awardee,” says Sunie Solomon, Texas Trailblazer Award Luncheon Co-Chair. “Under his leadership Paul Quinn has become nationally renowned for its innovative approach, using higher education to address the most persistent and pressing problems of society, including domestic violence.”

Sorrell was recently named to Fortune Magazine’s list of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders.

He is the only two-time recipient of the HBCU Male President of the Year Award in history (2016 and 2012) and has been nominated a record six times. Washington Monthly Magazine identified him as one of America’s 10 Most Innovative College Presidents and Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. and PUSH/Excel honored him with its Education Leadership Award.
