Crime Reports June 11 – 17

SKULDUGGERY OF THE WEEK: DRIVING BAREFOOT

Everyone listen: Do not try to change your shoes while driving. A motorist heading southbound at 30 mph in the 4800 block of Armstrong Parkway learned his lesson the hard way by slamming his 2013 Chrysler 300 into a fire hydrant around 8:43 p.m. June 12.  The driver told police that he took his eyes off the road for just a second. Police issued the driver a citation for not being able to provide proof of insurance and sent him on his way – without his vehicle, of course.

HIGHLAND PARK

11 Monday

If identity theft was made into a horror movie, this Highland Park resident’s story would be a great premise. It all started June 1 when Citizen’s One called to inform her that her request for a $5,000 loan had been approved, according to a police report filed at 6:32 p.m. Then, a week later, mail at the home in the 3600 block of Euclid Avenue stopped arriving. Turns out someone had placed a hold on it with plans to collect it – and the several credit cards they’d applied for – at the post office.

16 Saturday

This time it wasn’t a rental bike. Around 6:38 p.m., a green and black Hyper Act IV that appeared to have been stolen – a cut bicycle chain was still wrapped around its frame – was left upright on a sidewalk in the 4900 block of Hillcrest Avenue.

17 Sunday

Stolen before noon: both exterior mirrors on a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe parked overnight in the 4500 block of Edmondson Avenue.

UNIVERSITY PARK

11 Monday

A Samsung refrigerator, valued at $2,300, was stolen around 9:20 p.m. from a home in the 3400 block of Haynie Avenue.

12 Tuesday

Sometime between noon and 6:30 p.m., a bicycle valued at $549.99 was stolen from the 3400 block of Binkley Avenue.

Snider Plaza business purchased about $100 worth of diamonds from a customer around 2 p.m. Turns out they were fake.

13 Wednesday

Luggage stuffed with valuables – more than $20,000 of jewelry – was stolen between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. from an open garage in the 4100 block of Druid Lane.

15 Friday

While a vacant home for sale might scream, “come on in,” the owners weren’t too pleased when a group of teens were trespassing on the property. Police officers were called out to the home in the 3600 block of Granada Avenue around 5:47 p.m.

16 Saturday

Around 10:30 a.m., a table saw, valued at $900, was stolen from the front lawn of a home in the 4000 block of McFarlin Boulevard.

About $200 worth of Tide Pods were stolen around 11 a.m. from the CVS in the 3000 block of Mockingbird Lane. We pray the thief isn’t eating them.

Stolen during lunch: a wallet, valued at $275, from a patron eating at a Preston Center Plaza restaurant sometime between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

17 Sunday

Stolen around 7 p.m.: a wallet holding $150 in cash from a 72-year-old man sitting down for dinner at R+D Kitchen in Preston Center Plaza.
