Hillcrest’s Gilliam Heading Back to State
Hillcrest senior Anne Gilliam will aim to cap her high school career this week with another state title in the girls singles bracket at the UIL state tournament in College Station.
As a sophomore, Gilliam won the first tennis state championship in school history in singles, capped by a thrilling third-set tiebreaker in the title match. Last year, she competed alongside classmate Zane Kohrs in mixed doubles and was the runner-up.
This spring, she rolled to the District 11-5A title and the Region II title in her quest for a second gold medal. Gilliam will face Juliana Sierra of Alvin Shadow Creek in the quarterfinals on Thursday. She will need two wins to reach Friday’s championship match.
