Gribble Earns First PGA Tour Win
After going years without a win of any kind, Cody Gribble only had to wait two weeks to break through on the PGA Tour.
In just his second event since earning his full-time tour card earlier this month, Gribble won the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Miss., and picked up a check for $756,000 in the process.
It was the first professional victory for the former Highland Park standout, who spent the past few years mostly playing lower-profile PGA events — and never took home first place in any of them.
That perseverance is part of what makes Sunday’s triumph such a great story for the 26-year-old lefthander, who was a college teammate of Jordan Spieth at the University of Texas. The duo won a national title for the Longhorns in 2012.
Gribble recovered from an opening round of 73 by firing a 63 the following day. He surged ahead on the weekend and emerged victorious by four strokes over runners-up Greg Owen, Luke List, and Chris Kirk.
So never mind that the Sanderson Farms is one of the more obscure events on the Tour calendar (most of the top golfers were playing in a more lucrative tournament in China). Rather, consider that Gribble’s achievement could forecast great things to come. And it means that in April, he’ll be playing at the Masters.
