Body Found Near Trinity Identified as Missing SMU Officer

Update 12:25 p.m. Aug. 25: Dallas County Medical confirmed the body found Wednesday near the Trinity River is SMU police officer Mark McCullers.

Around 2:30 p.m. Aug. 24, a body was found by a SMU police sergeant near the Trinity River close to Oak Lawn Avenue and Levee Street. SMU Police, Highland Park DPS, Dallas Police Department, and Dallas Fire-Rescue were at the scene this afternoon.

According to DPD’s Maj. Jimmy Vaughn that while the body has not yet been identified “I’m assuming it’s [Mark McCullers], the police officer we’re looking for …”

Vaughn reported SMU has performed weekly patrols of the area in search of the missing SMU police officer, who disappeared after calling 911 when his vehicle was covered in water during a flash flood near Turtle Creek July 5.

“We haven’t stopped looking for him,” Vaughn said.

Around 5:30 p.m., DPD tweeted:

Due to the high probability that the body recovered in Turtle Creek viaduct is SMU Officer McCullers he will be afforded every respect

According to Vaughn, DPD will take the lead on the investigation.
