Baylor Delays Hire of Local Doctor
According to D Healthcare Daily, dermatologist and Highland Park resident Dr. Clay Cockerell’s appointment as dermatology chairman of Baylor University Medical Center has been postponed. He was set to begin the role in early July.
The story reports that, according to Cockerell, the delay was a mutual decision between him and Baylor to allow him time to correct information from a CBS investigative report that aired in June.
The report unveiled an insurance fraud scheme that offered Walmart gift cards to veterans in exchange for DNA and urine samples. Once the tests were completed, the labs reportedly billed Tricare, an insurance program for the military and their families, for drug and cancer tests. Lab employees then discarded patient information, which included photocopies of personal and medical records. CBS identifies Cockerell Dermapathology as one of the labs with contracts with Tricare, but Cockerell himself has not been accused of fraud.
According to Baylor, current dermatology chairman Dr. Alan Menter will remain in the role indefinitely.
