Highland Park almost pulled an all-nighter on a school night, but survived in the opener of a best-of-three playoff series in the Class 6A Region II area round.

The Scots outlasted Rowlett 4-3 in 17 innings on Thursday at Scotland Yard in a game that took almost five hours and didn’t finish until well after midnight.

Michael Clarke hit a walk-off single to score William Wessman in the bottom of the 17th inning to break the deadlock, while HP relief pitchers Noah Williams and Tom McDaniel combined to throw 10 shutout innings for the Scots (28-6).

The two sleep-deprived squads will resume the series with Game 2 at 7:30 p.m. today at Rowlett. A third game, if necessary, is scheduled for noon Saturday back at HP.
