Rabbi Resigns Congregation Shearith Israel
Rabbi William Gershon, leader of Congregation of Shearith Israel, is resigning from his position, according to the DMN. His resignation will go into effect April 30.
In a letter to the congregation, Gershon — also the president of the Rabbinical Assembly — admits to a long struggle with his sexual identity.
“I have wrestled for many years with questions of my sexual identity, but was unable to understand, accept, and integrate this most personal and most intimate aspect of myself,” he said in the letter. “I regret that this struggle led me to take inappropriate actions outside my marriage that caused great pain to my family.”
