Palms and Thorns at Gateway Church

When times are good, it’s easy to praise God. But when times are hard, it’s only natural to wonder where God is and why He isn’t saving us. It’s common for this dichotomy of feelings to exist in all of us, and Easter is a perfect example of this.

One Sunday, people laid palm branches on the road for Jesus and cried “Hosanna (save us!), Hosanna in the highest!” They were praising Him and crowning Him as king with the expectation He would deliver them from Roman rule. Yet in just a few short days, those same people put thorns on His head and nailed Him to a cross. Only they couldn’t recognize He was actually fulfilling their cry for salvation.

I have taken hold of the words “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). God does bring salvation, but it’s not always the way we expect it. So until I see His plan fully revealed, I have chosen to believe His work on the cross is sufficient, and I praise Him knowing that sometimes it’s easy to give Him palms one week and thorns the next.

Gateway Church’s Easter Services are on March 25, 26, & 27 across the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. For service times and locations, visit easter.gatewaypeople.com.
